Javan Rusa deer are believed to be native only in Java and Bali in Indonesia. However, populations of them are spread across islands of the Indian Ocean and were likely introduced by Indonesian fisherman. It is possible some of these introductions date back over 1,500 years. The Javan Rusa is quite common on Mauritius and is considered a pest in the forests. There is an established hunting industry in Mauritius that will help you bag a trophy stag like the one pictured on this coin. (Which is not my kind of thing, by the way.)

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation in the south-west Indian Ocean, about 900 km east of Madagascar. Part of the Mascarene Islands archipelego formed by volcanoes 8-10 million years ago, Mauritius is surrounded by coral reefs and appears to be not only a tropical paradise, but an economically well-developed and politically well-managed country. Plus, they make lots of rum there AND when you Google the country name, their tourism board's site is number one, ahead of the Wikipedia entry.
